Kimberly Becoat is a contemporary painter whose work is a stylistic abstraction with a conceptual investigation of new materials and visual experiences. Some may see a flamboyant response to Sam Gilliam.

Her artwork incorporates layers of drawings and painting with found/recycled objects as well as work developed in commercial-driven, advertising styled paintings with elements of graffiti. “This series of recent abstract work is grounded in texture and structure (many of the works have paint mixed with sand, plaster, etc; applied to the paper, using these in a dynamic way on Mylar/paper.

“I build work in an architectural energy using unusual mediums on paper/vellum and Mylar. I explore the emotions left on the sides of buildings, sidewalks, how they become subtexts with stories of their own, breaking them away from their origins or a specific place/space in time.”

Kimberly’s work was selected in 2011 for the Second Annual Curate NYC) – announced by Mayor Bloomberg in September 2009 as a showcase for New York City visual artists to promote New York City’s image as a vital cultural hub.

Other group exhibitions include Danny Simmons’ Corridor Gallery in Brooklyn, NY. Corridor is an initiative of the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation, founded in 1995 by brothers Russell, Danny and Joseph “Rev. Run” Simmons. They have exhibited artists such as: Kehinde Wiley, Renee Cox, Mika Tajima, Shinique Smith, Suntek Chung, Odili Donald Odita, Mickalene Thomas and Wangechi Mutu.

Becoat has also been featured in a number of group exhibits at MoCADA, The Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts, a museum of contemporary art in the borough of Brooklyn. It is the first museum of its kind to be opened in New York as a dynamic space for African Diaspora forms of expression in the visual arts.

Deutsche Bank has one of the most comprehensive corporate art collections in the world. Their corporate displays highlight the most significant genres and influential artists of the past 50 years. Their objective is to support living artists, fostering creativity and recognizing innovative ideas for the 21st century.

Kimberly Becoat has served as a Program Manager in Art Education in various schools within the New York Department of Education, developing and creating new curriculum standards for visual arts programs, as well as teaching and mentoring youth in art-based nonprofits. Kimberly presently resides and works as an artist in Brooklyn, NY.
